2011 Season 2011 Season 2011 Season

This year has been a hard one to swallow, between inconsistent results and constantly trying to play catch-up on my training and gaining fitness. My broken collarbone prior to the season commencing was a setback but, with Olympic selection on the line this year, I knew I had to put it behind me quickly and look positively towards the season ahead. Simply, I had no choice but to race and train through the peak season with the hope of finding my best form quickly, in order to ensure that my ITU points were high enough to get starts.  After some bad results, which remain difficult to deal with, I had a very hard decision to make.

The Australian Olympic team still has not been selected. There was a selection policy decision made at the start of the year, but not one athlete has been selected to date. Hence selection will now come down to the first three months of racing next year and, in this connection,I am still one of the few athletes in the melting pot for selection.

I have analysed matters and concluded that my best chance of booking my ticket to the London Olympics next year is to obtain the best results I can in the first half of next year and to show the Australian selectors what I can do. Even with matters not working out for me this year, I know that I can swim and bike with any athlete in the sport. I think that is important, bearing in mind how the London Olympic test event worked out this year. I firmly believe that if you are not in the lead pack out of the swim come London-time, and in a position to bike very hard, you will simply not figure come crunch time.

So with that in my head, I have decided to shut down for the year and end the season early. I am having a short break now before beginning my base season training two months earlier than I originally planned. This will provide me with an opportunity to gain a solid couple of months of base training that I missed out on late last year, due to my broken collarbone, before beginning the season in earnest in late February 2012. I know with a solid base behind me I will be able to get the results I want and put myself in the best possible position to book my ticket to London. Some important changes will also be made.

So I am sorry that I am not emailing you with race updates and good results but with this readjustment I believe I will be more able to takepositive steps forwards and onto greater things. I will keep you updated on my movements and plans as they come to develop in the coming months!

Again, and as always, thank you for your unwavering support.
