HAMILTON ISLAND KIDS RACE

Hamilton Island Kids Race

A TOTAL of 53 children took part in Hamilton Island's second annual Junior Triathlon last weekend - including 28 from the Whitsundays.

In a move from traditional kids triathlons, the children didn't compete in age groups but instead raced a choice of three distances depending on ability and experience.

Division 1 included a 350m swim, 6km cycle and 2,500m run, Division 2 was a 150m swim, 3km cycle and 1,500m run and Division 3 was a 50m swim, 1km cycle and 500m run.

Whitsunday Christian College students Grace, Eve and Arden Booker who live on Hamilton Island were among the competitors.

The Bookers were joined by Emma Hannigan from Airlie Beach who recently won several races in the under 13 category of the Queensland Titles in Townsville.

Emma said competing in triathlons was "really fun".

"I like the bike riding best because you go really fast," she said.

Whitsunday Triathlon Club president Steve Jackson said the event was a good example of Hamilton Island's philosophy on catering to people of all ages.

"Everyone benefits," he said.

"The kids have a great time doing something healthy and positive, the parents' love that their kids are smiling and being active, the club members give something back to the sport that gives them so much joy by volunteering and the guests and community love it too.

"What's not to love about a six-year-old riding her pink bike complete with basket and handlebar streamers pedalling her way around the course?"

The junior triathlon is a home event for the Whitsunday Junior Triathlon Club that was founded three years ago by Ryder Harvey, Grace Booker and Anna and Rosie Saville in conjunction with Jackson.

Jackson said the aim of the club was to give the island's resident children an opportunity to develop as athletes and as people through these sports.
